Pondering Pedagogy

As a passionate music educator and avid violin pedagogue, I regularly reflect on my teaching and seek new ways to engage my students and guide them along their musical journey. To stay inspired and grow as a teacher, I'm constantly learning from my colleagues, students, and studio families.

In these blog posts, I pen my pedagogy-related thoughts, projects, experiences as well as journeys

Wow, it's insane how time has flown by, it's nearly 6 months since I last posted anything. I guess the COVID-19 situation and constantly fighting fires, adapting to new lifestyles and work styles, planning for TMC and our students as well as the uncertainty of the entire situation has kept us all on the edge.

These few months haven't been the easiest journey for sure, we're constantly thinking of Plan A, B, C,...

It's been a while since I had brain space to sit down and write. These few months have been a whirlwind and the time and energy of TMC's core team was entirely focused on our Teachers' Academy as we prepare our team to teach at our Instrumental Academies, both Piano and Violin, as well as our Early Childhood Programs. We are finally about done with the 1st Phase of all our three Teaching Academy as most of our teachers have st...

FINALLY! Super excited to share insights from my studio-mates about their journey to ditching their shoulder rests! I've seriously sat on editing these videos for more than a year and figured it was time to get to it... Many things are far from perfect in the editing and I'm no expert in that regard, but I just thought it would be an extremely useful resource for my students and colleagues, or just in general anyone else out t...

Artistry: Mozart - Million Moods.

All my favourites put into one! Chamber music. Music Education. Mozart. TMC Team. TMC Home. Most importantly, music-making with Christoven and Leslie and sharing this valuable musical experience with audiences.

Mozart Divertimento for String Trio. The entire experience developed from our desire to perform and share this gem with young audiences and families. Our ideas kept blossoming...

Teaching music is all about guiding our students to become independent learners and to be curious about the world of music. Besides the discipline of practicing, other aspects of learning that I frequently emphasize with my students is being open to new ideas they have never heard of or experienced. Cultivating these habits from a young age will ensure that they eventually have the flexibility to process new ideas quickly and...

When I finally married the Bon Musica shoulder rest with my SAS chinrest, I thought I achieved the perfect set-up, for myself at least! Before which, I've been through a few other shoulder-rests - Wolf, different kinds of Kun as well as tried a bunch of others from colleagues and shops. At that point, it was trying shoulder-rest after another and I never quite seriously explored the non-shoulder rest option.

I've been play...

"I had nothing to do, so I practiced!" Wow, I was impressed when my 7-year-old student came into class last week and that was the first thing she expressed! It's the holidays, kids are going wild during their well-deserved break, routines are broken, but I'm glad at least ONE student is bored to tears and enjoying practicing during her free time.

Practicing is a tricky subject, whether it is with kids, college st...

Building an inspired string teaching and learning community, organised by string educators for string educators.

Super stoked that we're getting the ball rolling for String Teachers' Collective next week! =) Have had this idea of a community for string teachers for years now, even contemplated a thesis related to it during my DMA days. I've always wondered why others such as the piano or band have such lovely communities but n...

At present,

Practice is a luxury

Practice is a need for the soul

Practice is the dream to phrase musically

Practice is the annoyance with dead strings or rattling that interrupt

As a young child,

Practice is mindless.

Practice is a chore.

Practice is an obligation.

Practice, or face the consequences.

Practice is a must.

As a teenager,

Practice is the means to an end.

Practice leads to finishing exams.

Practice is the bargaining chip to th...

Team TMC shot by The Studio Loft - I love spontaneous photos more than posed ones for sure! (Photo courtesy of The Music Circle Singapore)

One of the most compelling reasons for my move back home to Singapore is the existence of The Music Circle. The seeds of The Music Circle were planted in early 2015, one semester before graduating from my Master's degree. I received an email from a dear friend I've known for more than 10 yea...
